Lipstick is such a simple, inexpensive item, but during the worst economic times this small item might be enough to make a woman feel better about herself. The Lipstick Effect or Leading Lipstick Indicator was a phenomenon first reported in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Industrial production was cut nearly in half and yet the cosmetic industry did not seem to suffer. This trend has been reported again during the early 1980s and 1990s, and after 9/11.
In December 2011, Forbes magazine reported that cosmetic sales were still rising despite the country’s current state of recession. According to Ibis World Reports, the cosmetics business generated over $13 billion in revenue last year.
Most women would agree that when they look good they feel better about themselves. Nothing relieves a little stress for many women like splurging on something to make them feel good. This might not be cosmetics for all women though; some take satisfaction in scented products or good food.
